Text: Matthew 1:20-23
20…an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
23 “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a
son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,”
which means, “God is with us.”
This Sunday we are looking at the significance of names and our text is about a dream of Joseph’s. An angel appears and gives him a lot to think about. First his girlfriend is pregnant. Secondly, it’s ok to marry her because this is a God thing with eternal consequences. Thirdly, he will have two names: Jesus and Emmanuel.
There’s an old joke about a thief who is creeping through a dark house when a voice calls out, “Jesus is watching you.” The thief quickly turns on his flashlight and points it at the sound of the voice. There sits an old parrot. “Did you say that?” asks the thief. “Yes,” replies the parrot. “And my name is Moses.” “What kind of idiot would name a stupid bird Moses?” laughs the thief. “The same kind of idiot,” replies the parrot, “who would name his Doberman Pinscher Jesus.”
Well some of us live up to our names and others don’t. Join with us as we consider the significance of names, especially in the Bible. Add to that a baptism of one of our finest and we will be having a great Sunday.
